The trope

What is the friends to lovers trope?

Friends to lovers is a romance story in which the two people are friends first, often for years, and only then fall in love. They already share a life: the same Friday table, the spare key, the drawer of his things in her kitchen. Everyone around them has assumed for years. The story is about the moment one of them stops pretending the friendship is all it is, and about what the other one does next.

The trope works because nothing has to be explained. He already knows how she takes her coffee, which film makes her cry, and what her mother said last Sunday. There is no first date to get through and no stranger to learn. The love story starts where other books end, with two people who already know each other, and the reader feels every small habit turn into something warmer.

It fits any setting and any other trope. Two paramedics who have shared a shift for eight years, two mapmakers who have shared a workroom at court for ten, a baker and the bicycle mechanic on the other side of her wall. Romantasy stories give them a kingdom to serve together, or a winter court where every ball requires a partner and they always go together. The setting decides what they share. The trope decides what it would cost to lose it.

There is one rule. The friendship has to be real. If they were never really friends, the change means nothing. Show the years, the habits, and the people who stopped asking, and the reader will understand why she waits. The pleasure is in watching the person she calls first become the person she goes home to.

The arc

How a friends to lovers story unfolds

Most friends to lovers romances follow the same six steps. Use them as a plan for your chapters. One step per chapter works well. For a longer friendship, give the first and middle steps two or three chapters each.

  1. 01

    Ten years of Fridays

Show the friendship as it is: the key, the drawer, the Friday table, the way she corrects people who assume. Give them one habit nobody else knows about. The reader should want them together by the end of the first chapter, and should understand why they are not.

  2. 02

    Someone else

A man asks her to dinner and she says yes. Her best friend helps her choose the dress, drives her there, and sits very still in the car when she gets out. The date is fine. She calls him from the taxi home, and he answers on the first ring.

  3. 03

    She sees him

A small thing. He is asleep on her sofa with the lamp on and her dinner in the oven, and the television is off. She stands in the doorway longer than she should. From this chapter on she knows what she wants, and she is afraid of it.

  4. 04

    The almost

A wedding, a slow dance, a hotel corridor at one in the morning. He walks her to her door and stays one second too long. One of them says goodnight. Both of them lie awake, two doors apart.

  5. 05

    The distance

She tells herself the friendship is worth more than one night, and starts to keep her distance. He notices within a day, because he has always noticed everything about her, and asks what he did wrong. She says nothing. He lets her, which is worse.

  6. 06

    She crosses the kitchen

She is the one who goes to his door. She tells him there is one thing he does not know about her. He says he has loved her since the shelves and was waiting for her to want it too. The confession, and as much heat as you want after it, between two people who already know everything else.

Our AI remembers every chapter. The dinner he left in the oven in chapter two is still part of the story in chapter six, when she tells him she knew the television had never been on.

Story starters

Friends to lovers story ideas to try

Six openings to start from. Pick one to put it in the form above, then change the names, the setting, and how many years they have been friends.

  • Contemporary

    The spare key

She has had the key to his flat for six years, for emergencies, and has used it for every reason except one. Tonight she lets herself in after a late shift and finds her dinner in the oven with her name on the foil, and him asleep on the sofa with the lamp on. There are two bedrooms, and for six years she has used the second one. Tonight she stands in the hall between the two doors.

  • Workplace

    The restaurant partners

They opened the restaurant together eight years ago. She runs the dining room, he runs the kitchen, and everyone who eats there assumes they are married. Tonight, after the last table has left, he brings two plates to the bar instead of one, tells her the customers have been right for years, and waits for her to laugh. She does not laugh.

  • Romantasy

    The two mapmakers

She and the court's other mapmaker have shared one workroom for ten years and finish each other's maps without asking. The queen sends them north together to draw the new border: one month, one tent. On the first night he puts her bedroll on the warmer side, as he has in every camp for ten years, and for the first time she asks him why.

  • Small town

    The door in the wall

Her bakery and his bicycle shop have shared a wall for nine years, and a door between them that is never locked. Every wedding in town has seated them together, and every guest has asked. This Saturday he asks her to the harvest dance, the way he has every year, and for the first time he says it is not as friends.

  • Historical

    The letters, 1908

In 1908 a milliner and the bookbinder from across the street have written to each other every week since he moved to the capital ten years ago, two hundred letters each. He comes home to take over the bookshop and brings every letter she ever wrote him, in a box. He asks whether she kept his. They are in the drawer beside her bed, and she has to decide whether to tell him.

  • Romantasy

    The midwinter ball

Two healers have run the winter court's infirmary together for twelve years and know each other's hands better than their own. The midwinter ball requires every member of the household to bring a partner, and every year they go together. This year, in the middle of the first dance, he asks whether she would stay for the second, and admits he has wanted to ask for twelve years.

Worldbuilding

Build the life they already share

A good friends to lovers story needs more than two people who like each other. It needs the kitchen with his drawer in it, the Friday table that stopped asking years ago, the spare key, and the small kind habits the AI should remember when she finally says it.

Create the characters and the setting once. Our AI keeps every detail from one chapter to the next, so the dinner he left in the oven in chapter two is still part of the story when she crosses the kitchen in chapter twelve.

Tropes to combine with friends to lovers

Friends to lovers is rarely the only trope in a story. Add one of these and mention it in your prompt. The AI will keep both threads going.

  • 01

    Add a slow burn

Let the friendship last ten years before anyone says anything, as on our slow burn page. Every Friday counts, and the reader counts them with her.

  • 02

    Add forced proximity

A broken boiler, a flooded flat, one spare room, as on our forced proximity page. Two people who know everything about each other, in one small flat, for two weeks.

  • 03

    Add fake dating

They pretend to be a couple for one wedding so that the questions stop, as on our fake dating page. Nobody has to act. That is the problem.

  • 04

    Add a second chance

They were friends, then more, then nothing, in their twenties. Ten years later she is back in town, and he still has her number saved under the old name.

  • 05

    Let him fall first

He has wanted her since the shelves and has never said it. Write the story from her side, and let the reader see it in every chapter long before she does.

  • 06

    Give them an old rule

They made a rule at twenty-two: never each other, because the friendship mattered more. Ten years later she is the one who decides the rule has expired.

Writing tips

How to write friends to lovers well

Four rules that make the change from friends to lovers feel earned. Put them in your prompt, or save them as a plugin so the AI follows them in every chapter.

See how plugins work
  • Show the friendship first Spend the first chapter on the habits: the key, the drawer, the Friday table. The reader has to believe in ten years of friendship before she will believe in one night.
  • Give her a real reason to wait She is not slow. She has more to lose than in any other trope. Name what she would lose, and the reader will wait with her.
  • Let him show it before he says it The dinner in the oven, the seat he keeps free, the way he sits still in the car. He has wanted her for years. Write it so the reader sees it before she does.
  • Let her cross the kitchen She is the one who says it. He has waited long enough. Give her the first step, and then give them both as much heat as you want, between two people who already know everything else.
How it works

From first argument to finished chapter in three steps

No special instructions needed. Describe what happens and read.

  1. 01

    Describe the argument

Who they are, why they are on opposite sides, and where they have to meet. One sentence or a full scene description.

  2. 02

    The AI writes the chapter

A full chapter in your language, as explicit as you choose, ready in about a minute.

  3. 03

    Illustrate, narrate, continue

Add illustrated scenes and character voices, then continue the story chapter by chapter.

Friends to lovers questions

The questions readers and writers ask most about the trope and about writing it here.

▸ What is the friends to lovers trope?

Friends to lovers is a romance story in which the two people are friends first, often for years, and then fall in love. They already share a life, and everyone around them has assumed for a long time. The story is about the moment one of them admits the friendship is not all it is, and about what the other one does next.

▸ How do I write a friends to lovers story?

Start with the friendship, not the attraction. Tell the AI who the two people are, how long they have been friends, and what they share: a flat, a shop, a Friday table. One or two sentences is enough. The story generator writes the first chapter from there, and you decide in every chapter after that how close they get.

▸ What is the difference between friends to lovers and enemies to lovers?

Enemies to lovers starts with conflict and ends with trust. Friends to lovers starts with trust and risks it. In enemies to lovers the confession costs pride. In friends to lovers it costs the safest relationship she has. Both work here, and the friends version is usually warmer, slower, and quieter.

▸ Can my partner and I be the two characters?

Yes. Many couples were friends first, and many create characters based on themselves to write the version where it happened sooner. Describe how you look, how you behave, and what the two of you shared before anything happened, and the story stays consistent from chapter to chapter. Stories are private by default.

▸ How explicit can a friends to lovers story be?

You choose. The content comfort level goes from soft and suggestive to fully explicit, and you can change it for every chapter. The friendship can last ten chapters, and the night it changes can be as explicit as you want.

▸ Does the AI remember the friendship across chapters?

Yes. Characters, locations, items, and narrative arcs are saved with your story, and the AI reads them before writing each chapter. The spare key from chapter one is still in her bag in chapter twelve, and so is every Friday in between.

▸ Can I write it in my own language?

Yes. Stories can be written in more than 30 languages, and illustrations and audio narration work in all of them.
