The trope

What is the fated mates trope?

Fated mates is a romantasy story in which two people are bound to each other before either of them has chosen anything. The bond can come from a wolf pack, a dragon, a prophecy, a curse, or an old law of the world. It usually shows itself the first time they meet: a pull, a scent, a word spoken in the mind, or the simple certainty that this man is hers. In romance books the meaning is always the same. The world has decided, and now the two people have to decide what to do about it.

The trope works because the bond answers one question and leaves all the others open. She knows he wants her. He knows she feels it too. What nobody knows is whether she will accept it, and whether he deserves it. Every chapter is about the distance between a bond that already exists and a love that still has to be earned, and the reader watches him earn it.

It is one of the most popular tropes in romantasy, and it fits many worlds. A wolf pack leader and the healer in the valley town, a dragon rider and the woman his dragon chose, a queen and the man a prophecy named, a witch and the cursed prince. Contemporary stories use a smaller bond: the same dream every night, a name on the wrist, a feeling she cannot explain. The world decides how the bond shows itself. The trope decides what it costs to accept it.

There is one rule. The bond is not consent. A fated mates story works when the bond pulls and he still waits for her answer. If the bond decides everything, there is no story and no romance. The pleasure is in watching her refuse, watching him stay kind anyway, and the moment she says yes because she wants to, not because the world told her to.

The arc

How a fated mates story unfolds

Most fated mates romances follow the same six steps. Use them as a plan for your chapters. One step per chapter works well. If you want her to refuse for longer, give the middle steps two or three chapters each.

  1. 01

    The bond wakes

They meet for an ordinary reason: a delivery, a treaty, an injured animal, a job. The moment they are close enough, both of them feel it. Show what the bond is in your world, and show that she did not ask for it.

  2. 02

    She says no

She has a shop, a plan, and a life she built herself, and now a man she did not choose is asking to speak with her. She tells him no. He accepts it, and tells her where to find him if she ever changes her mind. The reader already knows he will keep his promise.

  3. 03

    He stays near, and waits

He does not push. He mends the roof, pays his debt, keeps his people away from her door. He asks for nothing in return. She notices everything he does and everything he does not ask. From this chapter on she looks for him.

  4. 04

    The bond grows stronger

Being apart starts to hurt, for both of them. She feels what he feels, or dreams what he dreams. One evening she touches his hand to see what happens, and both of them have to sit down.

  5. 05

    The price

The bond asks something of her: leave the town, join his people, give up a plan she made before she met him. Or someone she trusts tells her the bond is a cage. This is the chapter where she walks away, and he lets her.

  6. 06

    She chooses him

She comes back when she is ready. She tells him what she wants and what she will not give up. Then she says yes. The bond is complete, and as much heat as you want after it. She has refused him for five chapters, and the reader has waited with her.

Our AI remembers every chapter. The bell he hung at her gate in chapter two is still there in chapter six, when she finally rings it.

Story starters

Fated mates story ideas to try

Six openings to start from. Pick one to put it in the form above, then change the names, the world, and how long she refuses.

  • Romantasy

    The forest road

She keeps the toll house on the river bridge, and he is the warden of the forest on the far side. He crosses twice a day and has paid the toll for a year without a word. The morning the bridge ices over he carries her firewood across, and when he hands it to her both of them feel the bond. He asks if he may still cross tomorrow.

  • Contemporary

    The same dream

For a year she has dreamed of the same kitchen and the same man making breakfast in it. Then she walks into a bakery in a town she has never visited, and he is behind the counter, and he drops the tray. He says he has dreamed of her too, pours her a coffee, and asks for nothing except whether she will come back tomorrow.

  • Workplace

    The new partner

Two lawyers at the same firm are put on one case, and from the first meeting she knows what the pull means, though she never believed it was real. He knows too. He moves his desk to the far end of the floor to keep his distance, and still has her files ready every morning before she asks.

  • Romantasy

    The dragon's choice

His dragon has refused every partner the council offered for ten years. Then it lands in the yard of the woman who runs the mountain inn and will not leave. He arrives two days later, pays for the fence, and admits he has dreamed of her kitchen every night for a month. He asks whether he may come back.

  • Royal

    The prophecy

A queen has known for years that the man the prophecy names will arrive on the first day of winter. He arrives as the master builder hired to repair the east wing, and he has never heard of the prophecy. By midwinter he has mended every door in her rooms without being asked, and she has to decide whether to tell him why he cannot stop thinking about her.

  • Historical

    The captain's book

In 1888 a bookbinder takes in a water damaged book from a ship's captain, and the moment he puts it in her hands they both feel the bond the old stories describe. His ship sails in a week. He comes back every day to ask about the book, and on the last day he tells her the ship will wait as long as she needs to answer.

Worldbuilding

Build the world the bond comes from

A good fated mates story needs more than two people and a pull between them. It needs the rule that made the bond, the town that has opinions about wolves, the people who waited for him to find her, and the small kind things the AI should remember when she finally says yes.

Create the characters and the setting once. Our AI keeps every detail from one chapter to the next, so the bell from chapter two is still at her gate when she rings it in chapter twelve.

Make it yours

Tropes to combine with fated mates

Fated mates is rarely the only trope in a story. Add one of these and mention it in your prompt. The AI will keep both threads going.

  • 01

    Add enemies to lovers

The bond chooses the man she has argued with for years. Use the arc from our enemies to lovers page, and let fate make the arguments worse before it makes them stop.

  • 02

    Add forced proximity

Put them in one house for the winter, as on our forced proximity page. The bond is hard to refuse from across a town. From across a kitchen table it is almost impossible.

  • 03

    Add a slow burn

Let her refuse for twelve chapters instead of three, as on our slow burn page. The bond makes the wait hurt more, and it makes the yes matter more.

  • 04

    Add a rejected mate

He refuses the bond first, for a reason he believes is noble: a curse, a duty, a danger. She lives with the rejection and builds a life. Then he comes back, and this time he is the one who has to wait.

  • 05

    Add a marriage of convenience

The bond is known, so the two courts arrange the wedding before the two people have spoken. They marry as strangers, and the whole story happens after the ceremony.

  • 06

    Add a second chance

They felt the bond ten years ago and she walked away. Now she is back in the town, he never left, and the bond has not faded.

Writing tips

How to write fated mates well

Four rules that keep the bond romantic instead of forced. Put them in your prompt, or save them as a plugin so the AI follows them in every chapter.

See how plugins work
  • Decide what the bond is A scent, a mark, a shared dream, a word in the mind. Tell the AI how the bond shows itself and what it can and cannot do. A bond that can do anything makes every choice meaningless.
  • The bond is never consent He feels the pull as much as she does, and he still asks. The story is about him waiting. Every chapter where he does not push is a chapter where the reader trusts him more.
  • Give her a life worth keeping A shop, a plan, people who need her. If accepting the bond costs her nothing, the refusal is empty. If it costs her something real, her yes means something.
  • Let the yes be hers He has waited for twelve chapters. When she accepts the bond, give it a whole chapter, let her say exactly what she wants, and give her as much heat as she asks for.
How it works

From first argument to finished chapter in three steps

No special instructions needed. Describe what happens and read.

  1. 01

    Describe the argument

Who they are, why they are on opposite sides, and where they have to meet. One sentence or a full scene description.

  2. 02

    The AI writes the chapter

A full chapter in your language, as explicit as you choose, ready in about a minute.

  3. 03

    Illustrate, narrate, continue

Add illustrated scenes and character voices, then continue the story chapter by chapter.

Fated mates questions

The questions readers and writers ask most about the trope and about writing it here.

▸ What does fated mates mean?

Fated mates is a romantasy trope in which two people are bound to each other by the world they live in, before either of them has chosen anything. A fated mate is the person the bond points to. The bond can come from a wolf pack, a dragon, a prophecy, or magic, and it usually shows itself the first time they meet. The story is about what the two of them do with it.

▸ How do I start a fated mates story?

Start with the bond, not the romance. Tell the AI who the two people are, how the bond works in your world, and why she does not want it yet. One or two sentences is enough. The story generator writes the first chapter from there, and you decide in every chapter after that how close she lets him come.

▸ What is the difference between fated mates and soulmates?

Soulmates is the idea that two people are made for each other, and in most stories they find out slowly. Fated mates is the romantasy version: the bond is a rule of the world, it is felt at the first meeting, and it usually has a physical side, a scent, a mark, or a pull. Soulmate stories are about finding the right person. Fated mates stories are about what to do once the world has already told you.

▸ Can my partner and I be the two characters?

Yes. Many couples create characters based on themselves and let the AI give them the bond. Describe how you look, how you behave, and what the bond does in your world, and the story stays consistent from chapter to chapter. Stories are private by default.

▸ How explicit can a fated mates story be?

You choose. The content comfort level goes from soft and suggestive to fully explicit, and you can change it for every chapter. The bond can stay unanswered for ten chapters, and the chapter where she accepts it can be as explicit as you want.

▸ Does the AI remember the bond across chapters?

Yes. Characters, locations, items, and narrative arcs are saved with your story, and the AI reads them before writing each chapter. The bell he hung at her gate in chapter two is still part of the story in chapter twelve.

▸ Can I write it in my own language?

Yes. Stories can be written in more than 30 languages, and illustrations and audio narration work in all of them.

Ready to write the moment the bond wakes?

Describe the two people the world has already chosen for each other, and we will write the first chapter in about a minute.
