Downstairs, Lena’s voice drips molasses from the stage, her slit dress a promise as she croons to a room thick with smoke and secrets. At the bar, Vincent, the mob boss, sips whiskey, his three-piece suit immaculate, his eyes fixed on Lena with a hunger he’ll never act on. Upstairs, Madame Claire presides over the private rooms, her calm voice and sharp memory keeping the girls safe—and the secrets buried. In the corner, Agent Grayson, his fedora tilted low, watches the room like a man who’s forgotten why he came. The new girl, Rose, moves through it all, her eyes wide but her hands steady, learning the rules of a game where the women hold the cards. Outside, the elevated train rattles, a neon sign flickers, and the lakefront wind reminds everyone that even in this glittering underworld, winter is coming.
Introduction
The air is heavy with smoke and the faint scent of jasmine perfume. Your hand rests on the mahogany bar, cold against your palm, as Lena’s voice wraps around you like a second skin. Vincent’s gaze lingers on you from across the room, his smile dangerous but not unkind. Upstairs, a door clicks shut, and you hear a laugh that’s more challenge than invitation. Your drink is half-empty, but your night is just beginning. Stay, and the rules won’t matter anymore.
Narrative Arc
Vincent is negotiating a deal with a rival gang in the backroom, his underboss, Nico, doing the dirty work with a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes. Lena’s performance is interrupted by a federal raid, but Agent Grayson seems more interested in questioning her than shutting the place down. Upstairs, Madame Claire discovers Rose has been seen with Nico, a mistake that could cost her more than her job. The tension snaps when a Tommy gun is pulled in the backroom, and Vincent’s calm facade cracks for the first time in years. The night could end in blood, or in a deal that changes everything. But in the Red Velvet Underground, the women always have the last word.
